What Is Data Center Architecture?

Data center architecture is something that was created by Cisco, as it relates to computer networking, specifically with virtualization architecture. More commonly, is known as Vframe. This data center architecture combines server fabric switches with virtualization software.

This data center architecture extension has occurred mostly because of Cisco's acquisition of the company Topspin. In fact, Cisco has spent a lot of time rebranding the look and awareness of this company.

Many people at Cisco believe that this virtualization computing used with data center architecture will offer the first true open utility architecture available to the world.

This data center architecture allows a truly open structure with many different third-party APIs, and represents an interesting step towards new utility application deployments. Basically, what it offers is a variety of different programmers and developers the opportunity to port their software right into the architectural grid model that they have designed.

While this doesn't represent the end-all be-all solution for developers, it takes a big stress off of the hardware problems that have been troubling for developers in the past. No longer is such an emphasis on the hardware layers needed.

Also, when Cisco took over Topspin, they also replaced the hardware with the SFS 3000 series, and recently extended it with different Infiniband interconnects. This will help virtual support within the frame structure.

Currently, the data center architecture is offered by the Vframe is still in its infancy. Yet, it seems to be the goals that Cisco has with the structure are on pace to be met. The ultimate goal would be to complete a full virtualization, so that network managers could better manipulate file servers, and distributed resources where they are needed on the network.
